Welcome back to “Working at Comcast,” a peek into the working life at Comcast. This week, we head to Mount Laurel, New Jersey to meet with Chris–a Network Engineer working to enhance Comcast’s network infrastructure.
There are no average days for Network Engineers at Comcast. From problem solving sessions to developing custom software solutions, engineers company wide – including Chris – are constantly growing their skillsets, while building one of the largest computer networks in the U.S.
“You don’t stop learning at any point in your career,” Chris says. “It is one continuous chain of learning new things and keeping up to date.”
Chris is currently working on a software program that emulates Comcast’s vast network so engineers can build and test new solutions before deploying them in the field. He develops in Python and Perl on a daily basis and finds extra time to experiment and build tools in the lab.
In addition to his job, Chris is the proud father of a young daughter – who shows great interest in potentially becoming a Network Engineer herself one day.
“I really would like female engineers to apply for jobs in network engineering,” Chris says, “Especially because I have a young daughter who is remarkably bright and has an aptitude for the electronics that I’ve been teaching her… there are opportunities for everybody.”
