Andy Samberg, Jorma Taccone and Akiva Schaffer—collectively know as the comedy trio The Lonely Island—are best known for the edgy “Digital Shorts” series on “Saturday Night Live,” but the boys have turned their gift for hilarious (and insanely catchy) songwriting into the new mockumentary film “Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping,” which is now open in theaters everywhere.
What do the guys watch on TV when they aren’t traveling the globe promoting TV, film and music?
“Akiva’s obsessed with [‘The People v. O.J. Simpson‘],” Samberg revealed during a recent interview with XFINITY. “I really wanna watch it, but my wife refuses, so it’s out.”
“That’s the most enjoyment I’ve had watching a TV show in a long time,” Schaffer added.
“Comedy-wise, I’m still pretty into ‘Nathan for You,'” Taccone said, giving props to the cult hit Comedy Central series starring comedian Nathan Fielder.
Samberg is also a big fan of the HBO series “Game of Thrones” (who isn’t, amiright?), but also revealed a surprising taste for culinary programming on both Food Network and beyond.
“I’m super into—you know that website Eater? There’s this dude who does this thing ‘Dining on a Dime,’ and I’ve been obsessed with that lately,” Samberg told me. “He goes to places all over, he does it in Chicago and L.A. and New York. I like him because he talks about the history and the area and interviews people who have been going there for a long time and the people who run it. I dunno. I like it. I like his vibe.”
And what about Samberg’s Golden Globe-winning series “Brooklyn Nine-Nine“?
“They don’t watch it,” Samberg said of his Lonely Island pals.
“We catch it occasionally!” Schaffer argued.
“We hang out with Jake Peralta all the time,” Taccone added.
