TV Land is continuing to reinvent itself by picking up their Heathers pilot to series and giving it a 10-episode Season 1 order. Based on the 1988 cult classic film that starred Christian Slater and Winona Ryder, the reboot is a dark comedy set in the present day as Veronica Sawyer takes on a whole new set of Heathers in high school. The series stars Grace Victoria Cox, Melanie Field, Brendan Scannell, Jasmine Matthews and James Scully. Shannen Doherty, who played Veronica #2 in the original movie, will guest star in a yet-to-be-disclosed role.

Heathers will also be TV Land’s first hourlong series. TV Land president Keith Cox announced the pickup at the network’s panel at TCA today.

“Our take on Heathers is a cinematic, surprising and twisted comedy that gives a wonderful nod to the film while also creating something entirely its own,” said Cox. “We’re really passionate about this show and the satirical story-telling its provocative characters allow.”

TV Land, once home to series such as Hot in Cleveland, continues its push to get younger and edgier, following the success of Younger, starring Sutton Foster and Nico Tortorella, and the upcoming premiere of second-year comedy Teachers.

Also coming to TV Land later this year is a scripted comedy based on the childhood of Real Housewives of Beverly Hills star Kyle Richards.
